Food Plots for Beef Calves: Effectively Using Creep Grazing

چکیده

Small food plots are commonly used for managing wildlife and are often planted with high quality forages like ryegrass, clovers, chicory, or even alfalfa. These plots supplement wildlife nutritional needs during times when forage and browse is short or has poor quality. For example, alfalfa, lab lab, or millet food plots can provide high quality forage during summer months when whitetail does are lactating and bucks are developing antlers. This food plot concept can be easily applied to beef cattle operations in the form of creep grazing. This article will discuss which animals can benefit, which forages are suitable, and how creep pastures should be grazed.

Cow and calf performance on Coastal or Tifton 85 Bermudagrass pastures with aeschynomene creep-grazing paddocks.

Cow and calf performance was determined in a 2-yr, 2 x 2 factorial, grazing experiment using Coastal or Tifton 85 (T85) replicated Bermudagrass pastures (4 pastures each; each pasture 4.86 ha), without or with aeschynomene creep-grazing paddocks (n = 4, 0.202 ha each, planted in May of each year, 13.44 kg/ha). On June 10, 2004, and June 8, 2005, 96 winter-calving beef "tester" cows and their ca...

Digestion criteria in nursing beef calves supplemented with limited levels of protein and energy.

This study was conducted with grazing nursing calves (197 kg) to determine the effects of 1) limiting creep feed intake and 2) increasing the concentration of ruminal escape CP in creep feed at a limited level of creep feed intake on fescue and milk intake, ruminal NDF digestion, and total tract digestibility in calves fed high-quality, freshly harvested fescue. The treatments were 1) control (...

Corn distillers dried grains with solubles supplementation in a pasture-based beef production system

Corn Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (CDDGS) supplementation of Augustcalving cows or calves in a winter grazing system was evaluated. In two years, ‘Fawn’ endophyte-free tall fescue forage in six 4.04-ha pastures was stockpiled from mid-August. In mid-November, 24 pregnant, mature, August-calving Simmental x Angus cows (mean BW = 676 ± 2.6 and 669 ± 2.6 kg; mean BCS = 6.0 ± 0.05 and 6.2 ...

Creep Feeding – Pros and Cons

“To creep or not to creep?” That is the question that many Mississippi beef producers wrangle with in managing calf nutrition. Producers often have several arguments for either allowing calves creep supplementation access or for keeping creep access off limits. A 1996 survey conducted by USDA’s National Health Monitoring System reported that 19.5% of cow-calf operations in the Southeast utilize...

Early weaning beef calves.

Early weaning is a management practice that reduces grazing pressure on pastures by decreasing the nutrient requirements of cows. Calves that are weaned early are relatively efficient at converting feed to gain, and can weigh as much, or more than, calves allowed to remain with their dams until a conventional weaning age is reached. Balanced diets with excellent physical, chemical, and palatabi...
